Time For A Change

This is a totally personal blog post. It’s time for me to make some changes. As of today, I will be implementing what I will call The GOYA Plan. Look for the book and infomercial to come. I am in about the worst shape of my life. You could say I have been doing the P90Rex plan for years, which means I have been busy doing a whole lotta nothing. Let’s call it a fatness regimen.
Starting a new business in 2009 has had me totally focused on that. Not that I was working out before that. It’s just that as things grow and I’m getting busier, I need as much energy as I can get.
I don’t think I’ll be doing any before pictures. I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy. I want to lose 55 pounds. I will be updating you on my progress toward that goal. Basically, I want to try and develop just a couple of new habits. The name GOYA stands for Get Off Your Ass. That is paramount. I’m not training for a marathon, unless you call LIFE a marathon. I just want to get in the habit of walking.
The other thing is just a few tweaks to my eating. A little less of everything. A little less eating out. A little less portions. A little less eating a night and believe it or not, a little less computer time.
Yes, this laptop has become one of the enemies as well.

Don’t let John Kasay, Sr. find out about the weight gain!

Hey, he predicted 300 lbs by the time I was 30. I beat that by a long shot and have never ever approached that lofty number. Well, I guess it depends on your definition of “approached”.

And one simple diet trick. Cut out or way back on white stuff: sugar, salt, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and dairy. Sadly, there is white stuff in beer, wine and liquor, so cut back there too.

Rex,
Come down to Amelia Island for a week and Leslie at http://www.solpedal.com will get you on the right track. Or just come down for a weekend and try a free spin class at Sol Pedal. While technically you do spend part of the class OYA, I can guarantee you will burn the calories and have fun doing it.
Now that the weather is improving, I need to re-lose the ten lbs I found around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Good luck.

My spam filter normally filters out those shameless plugs or I delete them. But for a DGD and his lovely bride, I will make an exception.

I’m doing it with you, Rex! You’ve inspired me to GOYA (well, I guess that would be GOMA). I’ll update you on my progress. I, too will not be posting any before shots. I’m not sure the liquid crystals on anyone’s monitor could handle it.
GOYA, GOMA and GATA!!
Go Dawgs!

Awesome…welcome to the G.O…Our…A…team!

Rex,
I applaud for wanting to lose weight. A couple of suggestions I would like to make are invest in a good pair of shoes, even for walking, and strength training. Your body will burn twice as much fat if you add some strength training. Just 3 times a week or so.

50 is the new 40.
I realized this Thanksgiving how far I’ve slipped while playing touch fb with the kids. College kids. I was quickly appointed as permanent qb for both teams, My wife signed me up for the Peachtree this Sunnday. She more or less stated GOYA! and get back in shape. If we dont do it now it will only be harder later on.

Good luck to you sir!

There is nothing wrong with laptop time. It is the excess as in food and beer that is the issue, because that excess could be spent running. I appreciate you bringing that up Rex at this time of March Madness because it is TV, not Internet, that is more likely our downfall.
I love watching sports on HDTV 65 inch. I really do.
That the BCS is junk, is well documented far better than in this blog. Obviously, the BCS should conduct an 8-team playoff and let the games be the Major Bowls now, only back them up to the beginning of the dead month after the end of season. Those then 4 games Major Bowls, produce yet another New Bowl Game all bowls can bid on for the extra money to be split evenly among the 8 teams who earned their way in. How those conferences then dole out that money, is their own business – only Notre Dame cannot keep more than the team who gets the most in a Conference. And, then the game with the winners of those 2 games 2 weeks after the first round, would be yet a Second New Bowl Game with the monies once again divided the same way. No antitrust in that. Let’s talk about what is news today.
ACC is so great in basketball, I thought ?
UGA Women won again in the NCAA Tournament to run our record to 25-8 on the season, while Georgia tek has been finished in basketball for some time now both in women’s and men’s basketball.
ACC Sweet 16 ? Duke is it in men’s basketball while The SEC has 2 teams the vols and Kentucky.
ACC in Women’s Basketball NCAA Tournament ? 2 ACC has only Duke & FSU remaining while The SEC has 5 SEC teams remaining the vols and Kentucky again, and Mississippi State Vanderbilt & UGA.
750 wins for Andy Landers, averaging over 24 wins a season, so this is an average season for him.
18 times Andy Landers has been in the Regional Semi-Finals. This year’s squad cannot shoot. But, they can play some defense.
UGA advances to play Stanford, another school Georgia tek is NOT.
While the nation ponders the thoughts of Georgia tek bragging they are better than all the teams remaining in The NCAA Tournament, the facts are that not only did UGA beat Georgia tek in football 30-24 but also beat Georgia tek in both men’s basketball 73-66 and women’s basketball 56-50.
So, while Georgia tek remains at home their seasons over, UGA advances.
UGA also beat Georgia tek in the classrooms this year with a higher APR than Georgia tek in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, the Major Sports.
Assailed in the national press for your low academics, the worst in college basketball in the NCAA Tourney this season, Georgia tek also could not win in men’s basketball even with your 914 Academic Progress Rate, limited by the NCAA Probation to only 11 scholarships.
Sweet 16 for Georgia 18 times now for Andy Landers.
NCAA Tournament Action :
SEC 13-3
ACC 9-9
SEC Men 4-2
ACC Men 5-5
SEC Women 9-1
ACC Women 4-4
ACC has neither a winning record in NCAA Tourney Men
ACC has neither a winning record in NCAA Tourney Women
SEC has winning record in BOTH NCAA Tourney Men & Women.
SEC is kicking the butts of ACC in basketball, again.

If anybody can, it’s you Rex! Here’s to less of you…GOYA!

and more years of Roughing to come….

I live down in south Florida. When I saw that you were going on the GOYA diet, I thought you were referring to this Miami-based food company…which specializes in latin food. Beans.
http://www.goya.com/english/index.html
Beans, Rex. Lots of Beans. They’ll save your life.
03/22/2010 at 3:57 PM
I am familiar with that GOYA also. Probably too well, that’s the problem. There is nothing wrong with some black beans and rice(by themselves). I seem to always want them with Jerk chicken and plaintains, too.

G’ingOYA is the hardest part. I’m one month into a plan for the first time in my entire existence. It isn’t fun but already feeling an improvement and that is some much needed positive reinforcement. Plus golf season is coming. Totin’ your stix is a good way to add movement to your world. Too bad most courses aren’t suitable for walking…it is a different and better game on foot.
03/22/2010 at 3:49 PM
I expect to play some golf walking here pretty soon. Right now, I couldn’t make nine holes if I had to.
03/22/2010 at 7:19 PM
Let me know and you’ve got a partner.

Same shape or lack thereof, I agree about the computer. It’s a killer. Mine is age also(I’ll be 70 this year) and the painful degenerative artritis to the hips. Some minimal exercise is by walking the dogs, but to get my extra pounds (about 55) off, I’ll take to the stationary bike. I don’t take pain killers and am a candidate for a hip replacement (I have an appt.). I type these things to help shame you into “finishing the drill” and getting clear of your old habits. Earlier in my life I lost 40 lbs in 3 mos, so I am aware of the mental discipline required (substantial) and the change in lifestyle. Good luck and if you would like to compete in wt loss please say so.
03/22/2010 at 1:40 PM
I tried giving up the laptop and found myself googling on my phone:)
Best of luck!
03/22/2010 at 1:37 PM
Dang! Now I gotta find a new Santa for the office party.
Good luck, Rex. As you well know, I need to do the same thing.
GOYA!

Rex,
I have a medical background and have been studying nutrition for some years now. There’s been some good models out there, but there always seemed like something was missing.
I don’t believe in evolution (it’s silly) but nevertheless this guy’s concept is close to what is revealed in the Bible and promotes good, natural health, solving lots of problems. Even better, it’s a lifestyle you can live with and still enjoy very good food.
I don’t follow it exactly, except for the food guidelines, because I add a few things, but it’s a great baseline and it works.
Just click the link above if interested. IL

Sounds like a good plan! I myself am starting the p90x and hope to loose about 50lbs as well. Best of luck to you coach
03/22/2010 at 11:56 AM
Good luck to you. My oldest daughter is getting married in July so my husband and I are doing the same. It feels good to be losing weight and getting in shape.
03/22/2010 at 11:15 AM
OK Rex, you can do it! I love when people get motivated. If you haven’t heard of it, go check out the book “New Rules of Lifting”. It’s one of my workout bibles!
03/22/2010 at 10:48 AM
I’m finding my rear to be a little too comfortable as well. I started my own personal vendetta against larddom last week. Cheese Puffs at 10pm might be the perfect accoutrement to Cheers re-runs…but they’re not helping my swimsuit modeling career.
03/22/2010 at 10:23 AM
You can do it Rex! GAYA! GOYA!

Thanks JfLJ!
