The Richt Way

The recruiting game is one of shadows, of smoke and mirrors sometimes. Coaches make multiple offers and from time to time withdraw them. It’s not a black and white issue on either side of the equation.
More often than not the school/program has the upper hand in this transaction, but occasionally a trump card emerges and kids that have been incrementally empowered from their early childhood, flex their muscles.
Such is the situation of Da’Rick Rogers and the Nance family(click). I remember seeing pictures of Nash Nance from summer camp. I knew nothing about him, just that he was one of several in camp.
My understanding is the Nance’s were told that UGA was not going to offer a QB at that time. I can easily see the potential inference that if Georgia did offer a QB, Nash would be high on the list. You see, recruiters have to hedge their bets and keep multiple prospects on the line.
It’s not lieing, but it’s a qualified truth.
Then comes the late offer to Hutson Mason of Lassiter HS. Hutson apparently made huge strides as a QB from spring to late fall. He set several Georgia high school records and became a Parade All American. It reminds me of something the old sales trainer Zig Ziglar used to say. He said a “NO” from a potential buyer really meant, “Based on the information you have given me so far, I can’t say yes.”
The circumstances changed, period.
When another player blossoms and surpasses all others under consideration, is that a recruiters fault? But as a kid and a father who have heard the qualified promise of a potential scholarship, there still has to be disappointment. If you are used to having things go your way and you have the “rug pulled out”, stuff happens.
You know, I referred to this process as a transaction earlier because it is. Not that money changes hands necessarily, but a player performs as an athlete in exchange for an education and further development as an athlete. Both sides use what is at their disposal to seek the best result for themselves. Like I said earlier, most of the time, the school has the upper hand, but sometimes they don’t.
Many of Georgia competitors feed that “monster” that is the athlete of today. From Tennessee’s Wild boys to Auburn’s Tiger Night festivities to Florida just being Florida, and especially USC. To a certain extent it could be called pandering to the Hip Hop culture many kids embrace. Hey, Georgia does to some extent too, but there is a line.
I think many kids come to Georgia because of what Mark Richt represents as a man and as a coach. Just as many go to Florida and Tennessee and USC because those coaches mirror what that kid is and wants to be. I’ll let you put the label on it. You can’t blame a kid for wanting to be in a familiar place.
But you also can’t crucify Mark Richt, for doing it his way.
Because history has proven, nine times out of ten, Richt’s way is the right way.

You’re right Ally . I’m sure Deon Rogers was a 4 star recruit with offers from Florida and Ohio state because all those folks were sucking up to Luc. What a hoot.

Can anyone tell me how many teams in the country have been in the top 10 in rankings as many times as Richt the last 9 years? I do believe that would be zero. So as long as this is an outlier and not a pattern then I can live with it. Not to mention looking at our schedule, who we have back on offense and our new defensive staff I expect 10-12 wins (including seccg and bowl) this season and the recruiting will get right back to where it was before.

You would be a little prejudiced being a “dawg fan”, as I am one too, but let me assure you he is not the ONLY ONE AS YOU PUT IT. The winningest top ten teams over the last nine years in order are :1. Boise State (102-24): .809 astounding record, 2. Texas (103-25):.805, 3rd. Oklahoma (102-28): .785, 4th. Ohio State (98-27);.784, 5th. Virginia Tech (99-29);.773, 6TH GEORGIA (99-30); .767. 7th. Miami (95-30);.760, 8th and 9th tied Michigan and Southern Cal (92-32); .744 and 10th Tennessee (replaced Florida’s spot) (93-34) .732 . So you can see Richt is in great company, proudly so, but not alone by any means, there is great tradition at all these schools, and what might surprise many is that FLORIDA, L.S.U., AND ALABAMA HAVE NOT BEEN AMONG THE BEST WINNINGEST PROGRAMS, THE LAST NINE YEARS, EVEN THOUGH SEVERAL WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

It is good to hear some positive or at least not negative response to the Way Mark Richt has gone about things since the end of the season. If he had hired anyone without the offer to Smart then he would have been mud in the AJC and other blogs. The offer to Smart was difficult due the the ALA season still in play. When you make long term decisions you need to get it right not quick. In the end the media would not excuse a poor choice because it was a quick hire. The blog nuts need to get a grip, which of the coaches with a better ten year record are going to send money to hire:)

You neglected to mention that Blake Sims was our first choice & had Bobo & Richt not dropped the ball (& yeah they most certainly did with a number of offensive recruits this season-see David Hale & Dean Legge) he would’ve committed to UGA rather than Bama.
As for Nance: He’ll never see the field at UT past a spring game. Hell i wouldn’t bet a dollar he would’ve played at Vandy (his original commit). He just isn’t good enough. However, recruiting isn’t a business for the sweet & nice, especially when you’re competing against the likes of Nick Saban & Urban Meyer, amongst others. Derek Dooley outsmarted Richt, that’s a fact. He offered a two-for-one (which we have done also previously) and it worked. Pollack’s right, we blew it w/ Da’Rick like we blew it with most of the top offensive recruits in this class.
That better get resolved quickly unless 8-5 is to be the new “Richt Way”

So, to clarify: your assertion is that Da’Rick is worth two scholarships, his and one for his buddy Nance who, according to you, will likely never play a down in competition. Furthermore, from the AJC article about Nance and Rogers that is imbeded here, I get the impression that Rogers may have his share of struggles off the field. Nope, I think we’re better off without him. Give that scholarship to a solid, reliable longsnapper and be done with it!

I read an email this morning that Jim Tressel’s OLDER brother had sent to a Seantrel Henderson. It was pathetic. He was talking about how much he loved the rappers performing at the Grammy’s. Seriously.

Of the top 26 5-star recruits, only one chose a Big Ten school. As you just proved, there’s a reason for that.

I agree with Mark Richt about his decision. He could have promised the scholarship and brought Nash here just to get Da’Rick but he didn’t want to bring Nash if he wasn’t going to have a chance to play. I think that speaks highly to Richt’s integrity.

Gimme a break. The only reason we offered Deon Rogers (who thankfully bolted for Louisville in the end) was to get Jeff Luc. Everybody offers two-for-one deals, including Richt. And it’s not a knock on integrity, it’s just smart recruiting.

Ally…you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or what? damn girl…slow your roll a bit. everything will be just fine in the Athens. yes, there were some kids that we wanted that didn’t come…you know what? oh well! you gonna cry over spilt milk or clean it up… being a little short on WR’s may be a blessing in disguise.. we have A LOT of tallent on the edge and up the middle..if you know what i’m sayin. we have 10 guys who can catch the ball and we can only have 5 at most lining up to go in routes at a time. and that’s not including RB’s. yes we wanted Da’Rick…yes we wanted Green. the majority of the defectors were on the D side of the ball. but, we didn’t get ‘em…no big deal. we’ll be just fine! just like i said when Smart did join the team…we’ll be just fine! GO DAWGS!
