Tech’s Johnson is a Huge One

paul-johnson

Georgia Bulldogs Fans are the ones buzzing for a change today. Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Johnson went on local sports radio and issued marching orders for Yellow Jacket fans who didn’t like the backlash of a year of dishing it out. “Develop a thick skin. If a (Georgia)guy is giving you a hard time, punch him in the face”.

Sound like somebody unaffected by getting his ass kicked?

I never liked losing either, but had enough personal fortitude to not lose my cool under pressure. He has repeatedly tried to downplay the significance of the instate rivalry with Georgia. It’s to his benefit to do so because he knows he will always be second fiddle. I don’t mind the idea of Tech not being intimidated by Georgia, but this is over the top B.S. and he should be reprimanded by Tech officials, but I bet he won’t be. Being intelligent does not make you an ass, but in Georgia Tech’s case, it sure does help.

Avoid the rush. Hate tech early and OFTEN! TO HELL WITH georgia tech!
GO DAWGS! The only good insect is a dead insect. georgia tech rents cheerleaders from Georgia State. A nice looking woman on the campus of georgia tech is a visitor or just plain lost. Or blonde. tech’s mascot is a sissy.

What has Georgia won since 1980? About twenty Georgia-Georgia tech games. Georgia completely defines tech’s program and always will.

I hope Small Paul keeps ranting about this right up until kickoff in his tainted conference championship game.

If one of our coaches made an offhand, tongue in cheek remark like this, we’d call GTech fans idiots for making this much out of it.

That’s just it, our coaches wouldn’t, especially our head coach. All kinds of things are said behind closed doors, but on radio, no way. AND if any of our coaches has said something like this, GTech fans would be calling us ThUGA or some such nonsense. I was madder at his dismissal of our rivalry as much as anything. He is simply a jerk and he shows it on national TV quite often, calling his players “stupid”(Clemson game) when they make mistakes.

Agree. And we’d be wrong. Those comments deserve all the attention they get.

The nice thing about those comments is they are more locker motivation for the DAWGS next year.

Rex…Please don’t ever mention that Blubber-Gut and Adult Videos in the same sentence again. I don’t think I’ll be able to eat for the rest of the day.

It looks like the skin on Richt’s Willie was tougher than the skin on Paul’s Johnson last weekend, to me.

Just let Clemson beat them on Saturday and see what kind of temper tantrum he has. I’m sure this comment he made was tongue-in-cheek, for the most part, but losing to UGA obviously means a lot to him and may affect the team in the coming game, as well.

Clemson had them figured out when they played earlier in the year, and if not for a couple of trick plays would have won that game. Playing against this offense is probably easier when you’ve seen it before. I think Clemson takes it to them this weekend. This is one Dawg who hopes they do.

I agree that it was probably just an effort to make Tech fans feel better, but still uncool. Maybe for the first time ever I am loving ORANGE! Go Tigers!

  9. Paul Johnson’s a JERK. Georgia Tech should be ashamed to have a coach with such a fragile ego that he suggests they punch opposing team’s fans if they don’t like what their saying. Say what you will about Mark Richt as a coach, UGA has a man as its leader. Poor pitiful Tech has a big cry baby.

Paul Johnson saying that you should develop a thick skin but then in turn punch your heckler in the face is a pretty ignorant remark as he basically contradicts himself. Even as an ardent Bulldog fan I’ve admired Johnnson’s tenacity as a coach and his presence at Tech made me concerned about the future of the rivalry. But in the past several days the whole entire Paul Johnson coaching package has taken a noticeable step backwards.

  12. Paul's Johnson

Johnson is changing the terms of the debate, and mutt fans don’t like it. He asks tough questions that you boys wish he wouldn’t ask. How many times in the 90′s did FSU beat a Florida team enroute to the SEC championship game? Did FSU’s victories diminish the SEC title game? His logic is tough to question. Have a nice day.

His questions did not precipitate this post. His flippant and crass attitude did. I have no problem with Coach Johnson striving to make Tech a competitive program in the ACC, which he has done while the traditional powers are in down cycles. I have no doubt he can do the same long term even when those programs come back. To say that our instate rivalry is inconsequential is a feeble attempt to distract Tech fans, but it will not work. This rivalry matters to both sides, although to varying degrees at different times.

Although your FSU/UF point is valid, there is nowhere near the long term rivalry present with those two schools. They were both pretty bad for a long time. Their 20 years of mutual national relevancy has not produced the kind of multi-generational clean old-fashioned we all enjoy so much.

      Thanks for commenting.

I believe that one fact is missing concerning the Florida-FSU series from the 1990′s…like the fact that FSU was a national power during that time…as was Florida. FSU’s victories didn’t diminish the SEC title game because they were always in the national championship hunt during those years. For 10-1 Tech and 8-3 Clemson to lose to UGA and South Carolina when both teams were 6-5 DOES diminish the ACC championship game as neither UGA nor South Carolina were having good years, neither team was ranked and both games were upsets. It IS a downer for both ACC teams as neither is on any sort of high coming into the game and now neither team is ranked in the top 10 either. This is not sour grapes, just the facts. PJ’s logic is that of a coach trying to find some sort of good out of such a bad game for his team. PJ’s comments are also that of a sore loser (this is referring to the “punch them in the face” comments). Guess HE doesn’t have a “thick skin.”

Maybe Georgia and South Carolina should play for the ACC Championship…

    Go Walsh and Butler!

  14. This is hilarious. Yes he is a huge one. Unfortunately he will never get to use it. He is a gnat now.
I should note, I was corrected about there not being any Tech legacy students. I totally forgot about the mail order bride industry.
