Peach State Pigskin

peach-1

Pigskin in the Peach State can only mean one thing this week….clean old-fashioned hate. Georgia Southern is done, Georgia State is looking toward 2010.  Georgia and Georgia Tech are focused on tomorrow night and the “State Championship”. On the surface, it doesn’t look to be much of a game, but as I sit here watching the “Iron Bowl” I am encouraged that anything is possible.  Auburn is up 14-7  with 7:49 left in the 1st half.

Georgia Tech’s offense is clicking on all cylinders. The hamster that runs Georgia’s offensive machine has H1N1 and it’s not looking good. As many have noted, these two programs are seemingly headed in opposite directions.  An upset of the Yellow Jackets would go a long way toward changing that around.

As luck would have it Georgia Tech had an open date last week, so the Bulldogs have that going for them , which is nice….insert crickets chirping….no, there is nothing you could point to that would give the red and black faithful much to have faith in.

In addition to the season long struggles on offense, one of the only bright spots WR A.J. Green, is doubtful because of a shoulder injury suffered two weeks ago in the Auburn game. On the defensive side, freshman safety Baccari Rambo suffered a concussion late that same night and may not play either. It just keeps getting better and better people.

Can we just call in and say “uncle” or something?

Good…cause I’m looking forward to punching a bee in the mouth.

  1. If you look at this game objectively….we don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell. We’re a beat up team with the best player on either side A.J. likely not to play. They have an outstanding and complex offense facing our defense who were confused by a simple bootleg at Tennesse, screen passes all year long, and can’t picture how to stop a running quarterback. Add to this that our safeties (except for Rambo who also won’t play) haven’t defensed the long ball, which are about the only passes Tech throws and their offence should have a field day with us. On the other side, our offense too often shoots itself in the foot with penalties and gift wraps points for the other team by handing the ball over. This is why all the talking head experts predit a blowout. That said…this is still Georgia vs Tech and yours truly will be watching and hoping that our team has an awakening…plays smart and aggressive and finally puts together a complete game that swats these pests. Go Georgia!!!!

I like Paul Westerdawg’s comments about forcing Tech to play twice in Athens, for each one time at their small stadium to help get rid of playing Tech every year. I don’t think it’s a rivalry anymore either, we win about 70% of the time , and 30 of their wins were pre 1957! We could play some better BCS team each year to replace them, if our coaching gets better. I think Richt should stay, and at LEAST the special teams coaches should LEAVE, and send Martinez to coaching school. Make him study under Riley the Cincinnati ex -great probably going to Notre Dame, or under Boise States coach, and don’t let him coach again till he passes with a minimum score of 95%, then Richt should only let him coach one more year under probation! That would probably be the most realistic approach, since Richt won’t cut the umbilical cord this year, he’s already stated that!

The only positive thing to look forward to are the moving vans reserved at the Martinez family residence in Athens, GA early Sunday morning.

Other than that, it does warm my heart to know that no matter what happens, at the end of the day, two fan bases will leave that Pop Warner, erector-set stadium in the seediest part of Atlanta obsessed with ONE football team:

    The Georgia Bulldogs.

Their team is at best going to the Orange with a championship of a second-rate conference in tow, or at worst going to get our sloppy J-ville seconds in the Gator. That’s a pretty darn good year, no matter how you slice it for them.

But at 2330 tomorrow night, all 30,000 Bugs leaving their tiny 50,000 seat stadium (mixed in with the 20,000 Dawgs ready to go home for a quick nap and then driving up to Athens to help the Martinez family pack) will NOT be talking about Clemson and their trip to the strip malls of Tampa.

Nope. They’re gonna be talking about the Georgia Bulldogs. For the next 365 days.

They’ll talk about us WAY more than they talk about themselves.

    And that’s if they WIN!

If they lose, they’ll STILL spend the next 365 days talking about us.

Just another reason why it’s Great! To Be! A Georgia Bulldog!

  4. They are still Tech and we are still Georgia.

    Dawgs win 38-20!
