McCollum in the Mix?

Georgia Bulldog fans may or may not know the name Andy McCollum. I will explain shortly why you should. Andy and I both played football at Marietta High School and graduated in 1977. Andy was our quarterback and went on to play for the Austin Peay Governors. He grew out of the quarterback position and played tight end and even some guard before his playing days were through.
McCollum started his coaching career at Middle Tennessee and was there from 1981-1988, coaching all the skill positions on both sides of the ball and special teams at one point or another. From there he went to Texas-El Paso and coached linebackers/wide receivers and special teams from 1989-1993. Baylor hired McCollum in 1994 and Andy became defensive coordinator and associate head coach in 1995. This was when Baylor was good. Middle Tennessee State hired McCollum away in 1999 to be it’s head coach and Andy laid the foundation for MTSU’s present success on the FBS level. He is now wrapping up his third year as NC State’s linebacker coach.
Now, why am I talking about Andy McCollum? Because coaches at Georgia and Georgia Tech are talking to him. In recent days both programs have touched base with McCollum. Why? Because they know he’s a quality coach from Georgia that knows Georgia and recruits Georgia very, very well. Both the Dawgs and Yellow Jackets are looking to retool their defensive staffs although UGA has a head start in the process. Depending on how the DC scenario plays out in Athens, Andy McCollum might be a complimentary piece of the puzzle for the Dawgs.
I certainly hope so.

Looks as if he is headed to GT as a defensive coach and recruiting coordinator.

I could see Andy coming to Georgia as DC.I talked to him recently and he is solid.. I would love it!

I really mentioned him as a linebacker coach if our DC turns out to be a DB coach like a Kirby Smart…

Great site. First time visitor.
Andy sounds like a good guy and a great coaching fit. However, should we be concerned with the awful NCSU defense? Was Archer the problem?
Russell Wilson must have felt he needed to put 35+ points on the board every game to just have a chance.

More and More, Andy is a Vent Legend.

I really wish they would hurry up and make the hire already. The speculation is killing me. Additionally, I worry that that every time a name is brought up and then dismissed (for whatever reason) the less attractive the program appears to the recruits. For example, BVG was asked about his interest in returning to Athens and he made a public statement that he wasn’t–we don’t even know if Coach Richt was going to pursue him!
Rex, looks like Lane Kiffin is in trouble again…

I would love to see Andy on the side lines kicking ass or the at lest the threat of one for missing a assignment.A different look to offset the cool demeanor of CMR

Well, from a media/PR point of view: WHAT A GREAT STORY! I hope Andy is hired and back in this neck of the woods. I can see the ESPN features now…priceless potential. Wishing him all the BEST! The man is all about football and it’s a great time of year for dreams to come true.

To bad Ron Collins , Broyles award winner several times at Boise State, heading to the Univ. of Colorado. Rex, we really need a high powered guy, with great proven record, at a good school, got any names of good prospects for DC? Richt needs a really good committee helping him on this one, we don’t need some washed up guy, or unproven person from some ho dunk school, this is mighty important!

Never heard of this guy, but we could certainly use a good linebacker coach, a guy who realizes what a linebacker is! Baylor did have a great defense, so perhaps this guy could make us famous for linebackers, just like Penn State is now, couldn’t hurt! I’ll take your word for it.

This would be awesome, he deserves so much and has so much talent. Love to have him back home. Great article Rex.

If hired, Andy will be the best DC Georgia has had since Erk Russell.
12/08/2009 at 2:40 PM
Well, I don’t think he would be a DC candidate, but maybe linebacker coach. Hey I’m glad you like my blog. Come back.

Coach Mac would be a great addition to both of those staffs. He is definitely old school and you have to love the intensity that he brings to a program!
12/08/2009 at 1:35 PM
Andy would be a great pickup, he is a uga fan, always wanted to go there and play, but did not get the offer. He would crawl to athens for this job IMO, and we would be a lot better off with him too. Intensity is his trademark, man we could use some of that piss and vinegar for a change at uga. GATA Andy pulling for you.

Rex,
Just from the picture he looks to be pretty intense. Is he a fire-breather…the type of guy who won’t put up with any bull?
12/08/2009 at 10:42 AM
Yes, Andy is a great combination of old school and yet he does relate to kids well.
