Georgia Bulldogs Go in New Direction

georgia_logo1

So shoot me. Are you  right 100% of the time? Georgia Bulldogs Head Football Coach Mark Richt made some tough decisions and let the world know today. DC Willie Martinez, LB Coach John Jancek and DE Coach Jon Fabris will not have their contracts renewed for 2010. Many Georgia fans are dancing in the streets, but I am not.  Sure the moves were necessary, but I can’t celebrate someone’s professional demise.

I know these three will land somewhere else if they choose to stay in football.  My old team mate Hugh Nall, who was the offensive line coach at Auburn a year ago, is the CEO of a trucking company in South Georgia now. Word is he is as happy as he’s ever been.

Whatever these coaches choose, I wish them well.

…. and Hugh Nall married that cheerleader… What was her name Wagoner I think. That keeps him pretty damn happy also.

Rex did you see that Drew Butler was named to the AFCA All American team?

No, I didn’t thanks. That’s the first of many for him.

  3. I too wish all three well and do not celebrate anyone losing their job. I also feel for Coach Richt. Firing an old friend like Martinez had to be tough. That said we need a full time Special Teams coordinator and I agree that this coordinator should have the pick of the litter as to which players are on those teams. Money should not be a factor on any of these replacements and I hope we get the best available.

I feel Coach Richt made a thoughtful decision but I feel sad for the three families affected. I hate when anyone loses a job. I pray that they land in better situations.

  6. As one of the many fan’s who have been crying Free Willie for a couple of years now, I must say that seeing them have to move on in this particular way was tough to see. I would have much rather seen them move on by choosing to do so themselves, rather than to not be “retained” for another year.

I too feel for CMR, having to make those decisions could not have been easy, especially this time of year. I was glad to see he has the fortitude to make the tough calls, just as I was happy to see CMR get upset when the Gatorade was thrown on him while Tech still had a chance to win the game….. I hope that he too has learned some valuable lesson’s the past couple of years….

    Go Dawgs!

I’ll be honest. I didn’t believe Coach Richt had this in him. I didn’t believe he would ever make this decision for the good of his program at the expense of one of his best and longest friends.

Because I believed this, I lost all hope and faith in Coach Richt.

It’s nice to have some of that restored.

Plus, as a bonus, getting rid of Fabris, kills two birds with one stone:

    NO MORE DIRECTIONAL KICKS!!!

Maybe Rex or Kevin Butler can call Richt and request an interview to be a SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR.

    Coordinator. NOT just a “coach.”

Special teams is 1/3 of football, and it’s time Mark Richt start taking special teams seriously, as championship coaches like Nick Saban and Urban Meyer do.

Brandon Spikes plays on special teams. EVERY KICK.

Wouldn’t it be something to see No. 33 running down the field on kickoffs instead of some hard-working, but let’s be honest, scrub walk-on?

We need a DC who runs an AGGRESSIVE AND ADAPTABLE defense.

No more sticking to your soft zones and 10 yard receiver cushions because that’s what you like to do.

I want to see a multiple defense in here, like the Patriots under Belichick have been.

Adapt to every single team you play. If that means you play a 4-3 one week and then a 3-4 the next, that’s what you do!

You would have to beat the great recruits of with a stick because of how well you would prepare them for the NFL.

Just God, no more stubborn sticking to the two deep zone, allowing mediocre QBs like Erik Ainge, John Parker Wilson, and down right horrible QBs like Jon Crompton sit in a pocket and dink and dunk you to the tune of 40+ points.

This decision is one year too late, and that decision is on his head.

But, he would have made things much, much worse if he continued to hold on to men who just weren’t getting the job done.

Take a look at how bad FSU has been because Bowden spent too many years protecting his son Jeff from the rightful calls for his job, instead of getting someone who knew what they were doing as an OC.

Hopefully, this decision, unlike the one forced onto Bowden by his Boosters three years ago, isn’t too late to save Richt’s tenure in Athens.

I agree something that appeared it had to be done but as you so correctly mentioned. Families and lives are involved in all this and that is sad. I pray they land on their feet. Tony Dungy mentions how his firing at Tampa Bay was a blessing in the long run getting him to Indy. I hope the same for these 3 fine men and their futures. Go DAWGS!

You gotta keep doing it! You’re a part of my RSS feed, and a daily read. Can we make a deal? You can quit after we win the BCS National Championship, say, next year?

I’ll shoot you: you change the look of this blog around more than the Dawgs do uniforms, and that’s saying something! :)

I agree, I’m not dancing either. I really hope they decide to coach the bowl game. It would be “emotionally-fitting” to send out their family of players with a victory against an Oklahoma or an A&M, if they so choose.

    Go Dawgs.

I was tweaking for awhile there, I think I’m set. If I keep doing this long term.

I’m not sure I can or at least I don’t know how to change it.

    Rex,

I agree with you 100%. I too think it was necessary for Coach Richt to move in this direction, but I can’t celebrate someone losing their job either. They did give their heart and soul to UGA, but it just didn’t work out for the future and the best interest of the team. I also feel for Coach Richt because I know it’s something he hated to do.
I wish the Coach’s the best as well.
